Supporting Our Church

Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church thrives as a community --  a spiritual home and a path for doing good in the world.

We do this through the generous support of members and friends.

Planned gifts support our goals and provide resources for programs that make our church possible. These include salaries (for our minister and staff) and funds for the maintenance of buildings and grounds.

Our annual operating budget is funded largely through annual pledges by church members and friends. Your personal contribution is a private decision. We hope that you give as generously as possible, knowing that together we sustain our church community and everything we achieve together.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) provides the following Giving Guidelines. The Pledge Forms can be completed and submitted confidentially to the chair of the Stewardship Committee (Lauri Holder) or to our church administrator (Debbie Horvay). Donations can be made on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.  All are encouraged to authorize automatic bank withdrawals which save the church money and provide for a steady cash flow throughout the year.

Thank you for your financial support and being a vital part of Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church!

The Endowment Fund Board is very pleased to recognize the first members of the TJ Legacy Society.

The TJ Legacy Society is a group of TJ members and friends who choose to thoughtfully create a lasting gift to support the faith community that means so much to us all. As in the Unitarian Universalist search for truth and meaning, there are many pathways to generosity…many ways to use your financial resources to support our great liberal religious heritage for future generations.

We now have over a dozen Charter Members of the TJ Legacy Society!

Q. If I make a planned gift through the Legacy Society, what will be done with my gift? Does it go to the general operating fund like my pledge?
A. No, a planned Legacy Society gift goes into the Endowment Fund, not the operating budget. Endowment Fund assets are not used for general operating expenses.

Q. How much is in the Endowment Fund now and why is it important to grow that amount?

A. The Endowment Fund currently has just over $100,000. The bylaws allow earnings from the fund to be used for “good works and acts of honoration and beneficence.” In the recent past, the Endowment Fund has been able to purchase the automatic front entrance door and the replacement windows in the preschool and RE wings of the church. With a larger endowment fund balance, more earnings will be available to benefit TJ and the broader community in the future.

In 2008, donations from the congregation totaling $9,000, plus $1,000 from the Endowment Fund, were invested in the Calvert Fund microfinance program.

Our investment was matched with $10,000 from the UUA, putting $20,000 to work to alleviate poverty in developing countries. The Calvert Fund is a professionally managed portfolio of affordable loans to over 200 nonprofits and social enterprises. On April 1, our note matured and the original investment plus interest was reinvested for another year at a 1% interest rate.

Especially in the current global economy, this is a great way to earn interest on the Endowment Fund, while furthering our UU principles.

Public Radio + TJUC Pledge = Winning Combination! PDF Print E-mail

The pledge drive for the local public radio stations, Louisville Public Media, happens in October.

Would you consider sending the usual amount of your pledge donation to TJ instead, to be used for advertising us on public radio?

This creative idea has benefitted other UU churches, and is a win/win for both TJ and public radio (whose listenership has a demographic that matches the typical UU-interested person).
